The quick verdict
Winner
HubSpot
“HubSpot wins when email must live inside a CRM growth platform; Mailchimp wins for standalone email marketing simplicity.”
HubSpot vs Mailchimp is “platform versus ESP.” HubSpot wants every contact, deal, ticket, and page in one graph. Mailchimp wants to send the email. If marketing’s job is inbound — forms, blog, scoring, sales handoff — HubSpot is the product. If marketing’s job is newsletters and promotions beside a CRM you already like, Mailchimp is less politics and less money.
Do not compare Mailchimp Standard (~$20/month intro at small lists) to HubSpot Marketing Hub Professional (~$890/month plus ~$3,000 onboarding). That is how HubSpot looks insane and Mailchimp looks “done.” The honest small-team compare is Mailchimp vs HubSpot free CRM + Marketing Starter (~$15–20/seat). The honest automation compare is Mailchimp paid vs HubSpot Professional. Most buyers are in one of those two conversations, not both.
StackClash gives HubSpot the verdict when email is part of a CRM motion. Mailchimp keeps the win for standalone email. If you only need automations without a full hub, ActiveCampaign is often the better third option than forcing HubSpot Professional.
Scorecard
Scores are 1–10 for a typical mid-market buyer. They are editorial, not lab benchmarks.
| Round | HubSpot | Mailchimp | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| CRM + marketing together | 10 | 4 | This is HubSpot’s category. Mailchimp is an ESP. |
| Email campaigns | 7 | 9 | Mailchimp is still nicer for broadcast email and templates. |
| Inbound / content | 9 | 4 | Blogs, CMS, landing pages, and SEO tools are HubSpot hubs, not Mailchimp extras. |
| Price as “just email” | 4 | 9 | Never buy HubSpot Professional to replace a newsletter tool. |
| Price as a growth platform | 7 | 3 | Once you need CRM + marketing + reporting, HubSpot replaces several tools. |
| Time to first campaign | 7 | 9 | Mailchimp: this afternoon. HubSpot: after you decide what a contact is. |
How they actually differ
HubSpot contacts are CRM records. Properties, lifecycle stages, companies, deals, and (later) tickets all attach. Email is one action on that record. That architecture is why HubSpot reporting can answer “which campaign created pipeline,” and why implementation feels heavier than an ESP.
Mailchimp contacts are audience members. Tags, segments, and a connected store get you far. They will not replace a sales CRM. Intuit’s broader world (QuickBooks) is a different gravity well than HubSpot’s inbound OS.
Starter HubSpot is closer to Mailchimp than people think — until you want workflows, A/B tests, and custom reports, which shove you to Professional. Many companies should stay on Mailchimp + a cheap CRM instead of taking that jump.
Pricing snapshot (August 27, 2026)
USD 2026. HubSpot = Marketing Hub list pricing. Mailchimp = marketing plans; public tiles are often intro rates.
| Scenario | HubSpot | Mailchimp |
|---|---|---|
| Free | Free CRM; limited marketing sends/tools | Free under 250 contacts |
| Entry paid | Marketing Starter ~$15–20/seat/mo | Standard often ~$20/mo intro at small lists |
| Automation-grade | Professional ~$890/mo + ~$3,000 onboarding | Standard/Premium with flows — still an ESP |
| Enterprise | ~$3,600/mo + ~$7,000 onboarding | Premium / custom high-volume |
- • HubSpot Professional is a different purchase than Mailchimp. If Professional is not in budget, do not use HubSpot as your MAP yet.
- • Mailchimp will never include a full CRM no matter how much you spend on Premium.
- • A common cheaper HubSpot alternative for automation-only buyers is ActiveCampaign Plus.
Choose HubSpot if
- →You want one database for marketing and sales
- →Inbound content, landing pages, and attribution are in scope
- →You will fund Professional when automation becomes the job
- →You are leaving a pile of disconnected form/email/CRM tools
Choose Mailchimp if
- →You already have a CRM and only need an ESP
- →Newsletters and promotions are the brief
- →You will not pay ~$890/mo plus onboarding for marketing software
- →Your team is small and campaign-led, not funnel-led
When HubSpot is overkill
If you have 2,000 newsletter subscribers, no sales team, and a Squarespace site, HubSpot Professional is a status purchase. Mailchimp (or Kit, or Brevo) will send the mail. HubSpot’s value appears when a second team needs the same contacts — sales, success, or content — and you are tired of CSV syncs.
When Mailchimp is a dead end
Lead forms dumping into an audience, reps working Gmail, no lifecycle stage, no attribution. That stack hits a wall. HubSpot’s free CRM is the cheapest way to see if a real CRM motion helps. You can keep Mailchimp while you test HubSpot CRM; you should not keep both as systems of record for long.
Email quality vs platform quality
Mailchimp emails often look better out of the box. HubSpot emails look like HubSpot until a designer spends time. Buyers who pick on template beauty stay on Mailchimp. Buyers who pick on “did this MQL become a deal” move to HubSpot and live with the editor.
A saner three-way
Mailchimp = ESP. ActiveCampaign = MAP + light CRM. HubSpot = platform. If you are HubSpot-curious because Mailchimp automations feel thin, try ActiveCampaign before you sign a Professional order form. If you are Mailchimp-curious because HubSpot Starter cannot automate, you wanted Professional or a MAP all along.

Frequently asked questions
- Is HubSpot better than Mailchimp?

- Can HubSpot replace Mailchimp?
- Yes on Professional+. On free/Starter you may miss campaign comfort and hit automation limits. Migrate when you are ready to treat contacts as CRM records.
- Can Mailchimp replace HubSpot?
- Only if you never needed the CRM. It will not replace pipelines, service tickets, or a CMS.
- Which is cheaper?
- Mailchimp, for email. HubSpot free CRM is cheaper than both if you only needed a contact database. HubSpot Professional is far more expensive than Mailchimp.
- We use Mailchimp and HubSpot CRM together. Should we consolidate?
- If reporting is split and leads duplicate, yes — pick HubSpot as the ESP when you can afford the marketing hub that matches your automation needs, or keep Mailchimp and accept the sync tax.
