The quick verdict

Winner

Klaviyo

“Klaviyo wins for data-rich DTC brands; Omnisend wins when multi-channel push/SMS simplicity and price matter more.”

Klaviyo vs Omnisend is the ecommerce ESP fight that actually happens on Shopify app pages. Klaviyo is the category leader: profile-centric data, predictive analytics, and flows that merchandisers treat as revenue infrastructure. Omnisend is the multi-channel challenger: email, SMS, and web push in one product, 24/7 support on every plan, a free 5-day migration, and list prices that are often 20–35% under Klaviyo at the same size.

Klaviyo Email is about $30/month at 1,000 active profiles and $150/month at 10,000, with SMS as a credit layer or Email + SMS plans from ~$35/month at the first paid band. Omnisend’s public calculator is promotional (for example Standard around $11–16/month at 500 contacts on a 3-month-upfront discount, Pro with unlimited emails and SMS from $0.007 at volume). Free on both is ~250 contacts / 500 emails. Omnisend bills “people who received automated messages,” including some non-subscribers — read the fine print. Klaviyo bills every active profile you could message.

StackClash gives Klaviyo the verdict for serious, data-heavy DTC. Omnisend is the better buy when you want multi-channel without Klaviyo’s profile tax or learning curve, and when “we will migrate you in five days” is the feature. If Klaviyo is already printing money, do not churn for a 25% software discount.

Scorecard

Scores are 1–10 for a typical mid-market buyer. They are editorial, not lab benchmarks.

RoundKlaviyoOmnisendWhy
Profile / predictive data107Klaviyo’s CDP-ish profiles and predictions are the moat. Omnisend is strong, not the same depth.
Email + SMS + push in one UI89Omnisend treats push as first-class. Klaviyo’s SMS+email pairing is excellent; push is less the brand.
Price at 10k contacts68Omnisend is usually cheaper. Klaviyo charges for the data platform you might actually need.
Migration & support79Omnisend’s free migration and 24/7 support on free plans is aggressive on purpose.
Ecosystem / talent96Klaviyo agencies, contractors, and playbooks are everywhere. That is a switching cost.
Fit below $1M GMV78Omnisend is plenty. Klaviyo is still fine — just easier to overbuy.

How they actually differ

Klaviyo wants to be the customer data layer for the store: events, catalog, predicted next order date, RFM-style segments, and flows that assume you will live in the product. Agencies know the templates. Hiring a “Klaviyo person” is a real job title.

Omnisend wants to be the channel suite: campaigns, automations, SMS credits, web push, forms, and a product recommender, with less ceremony. Pro unlimited email (fair use) changes the psychology versus Klaviyo’s send caps (usually 10× profiles — rarely binding) and profile meter (always binding).

Switching from Klaviyo to Omnisend is Omnisend’s whole go-to-market right now. They will rebuild flows. You will still lose some historical nuance and you will need to retrain whoever owned Klaviyo. Switching the other way is “we grew into the data model.” Both stories are legitimate.

  • • Klaviyo active profiles include anyone still contactable, not just last month’s recipients. Hygiene is a cost-control process.
  • • Omnisend’s billable-contact definition includes some automation recipients who are not subscribers. Confirm how your list will be counted.
  • • Omnisend 3-month-upfront discounts expire; model the post-promo rate.
  • • If Klaviyo is already attributed to a meaningful % of revenue, software savings are not the ROI analysis — retention of flows is.

Choose Klaviyo if

  • →You will use predicted LTV, deep catalog segments, and a Klaviyo-shaped team
  • →Email revenue is already material and you do not want to restack the engine
  • →You want the default Shopify talent pool and agency market
  • →SMS should share the same rich profiles as email

Choose Omnisend if

  • →You want email + SMS + web push without a CDP project
  • →Price and 24/7 support matter more than predictive nerd knobs
  • →You are migrating from Mailchimp or Klaviyo and want it done for you
  • →You are earlier-stage and Klaviyo would be unused sophistication

Data vs channels

Pick Klaviyo when the question is “which customers should see which products.” Pick Omnisend when the question is “can we get email, SMS, and push live without a specialist.” Both have segmentation. Klaviyo’s is the one people write playbooks about.

SMS economics

Omnisend is loudly cheaper per SMS at volume in the US. Klaviyo SMS is tightly bound to the same profiles and flows, which is why brands stay. If SMS is a side channel, Omnisend’s credit packs are simpler. If SMS is a core revenue line in the same journeys as email, Klaviyo’s combined model is the point.

The talent market

This is Klaviyo’s quiet moat. Contractors, agencies, and YouTube already speak Klaviyo. Omnisend is learnable; you may teach it yourself. If you need to hire in a month, Klaviyo is the liquid market.

When the cheaper tool loses

Stores that move to Omnisend to save $80/month and then pause flows during migration lose more than a year of software savings. If you switch, treat it as a merchandising project with a freeze window, not a billing ticket.

Frequently asked questions

Is Omnisend cheaper than Klaviyo?
Usually on software, at the same list size, especially if you use the Standard/Pro promotions. Confirm billable contacts and SMS credits, not just the headline tile.
Is Klaviyo worth the extra cost?
If you use the data model and it attributes real revenue, yes. If you send campaigns and three default flows, probably not.
Can Omnisend migrate me from Klaviyo?
That is a core offer — they advertise rebuilding the setup in about five days. You still need to QA every flow before you cut DNS and sending.
Which is better for Shopify?
Both are first-class Shopify apps. Klaviyo is the default for scaling DTC. Omnisend is the default “Klaviyo but less” shortlist.
Do I need web push?
If yes, Omnisend includes it more naturally. If no, do not pick Omnisend only for a channel you will not operate.
